Courchesne Helps Lift Terriers Past Kings

YORKTON, SK – Gabriel Courchesne’s goal just 1:52 into the third period stood as the game-winner as the Yorkton Terriers defeated the Dauphin Kings for the second straight night at Westland Insurance Arena.

The Terriers opened the scoring in the first period when Gabriel Courchesne, Trae Peterson, and Owen Roberts combined on a passing play, with Roberts finishing for his first of the preseason. Dauphin had the lone power play of the frame after a delay-of-game call against Evan Auld, but Yorkton’s penalty killers stood tall. The Terriers outshot the Kings 16-11 in the opening twenty minutes, with goaltender Alexandro Montoya turning aside everything he faced.

Early in the second, the Terriers doubled their lead shorthanded. Quinn Tavender threaded a slap-pass to a wide-open Austin Horbachewsky, who buried his first of the preseason. The Kings responded shortly after on the man advantage, as Kale Pratte slipped a shot under Montoya’s blocker to make it 2-1. Both teams found the back of the net late in the period—Horbachewsky with his second of the night for Yorkton, and Quinten Fisk for Dauphin—sending the Terriers into the intermission up 3-2 and leading 29-22 in shots.

In the third, Courchesne restored Yorkton’s two-goal cushion, snapping a shot blocker-side for his first of the exhibition. Dauphin battled back with a late power play marker, but Montoya and the Terriers’ defense held firm the rest of the way to secure a 4-3 victory.

With the win, Yorkton improves to 2-0-1 in preseason play. They’ll wrap up their exhibition schedule with a home-and-home against the Melville Millionaires.
