Cole Dupuis scored the lone goal of the shootout as the Virden Oil Capitals rallied from a two-goal deficit to hand the Yorkton Terriers a 3-2 preseason loss Saturday night at Westland Insurance Arena.
The Terriers controlled much of the opening period, outshooting Virden 17-3 and building a 2-0 advantage.
Kaden Sperle opened the scoring with his first goal of the preseason, finishing off a setup from Hudson Earnshaw and Kale Johns to give Yorkton the early lead.
Mathys Morrissette added to the advantage later in the period, scoring his first of the preseason with Colin Ruotsinoja picking up the assist.
Virden began its comeback in the second period when Lucas Laramee found the back of the net to cut the Terriers’ lead to 2-1.
The Oil Capitals pulled even late in the middle frame as Davian Ferland scored to make it 2-2 heading into the third period.
Neither team could find the go-ahead goal in the final frame, sending the game to overtime.
The Terriers generated three shots during the five-minute overtime period but couldn’t solve Virden goaltender Adam Courchesne, sending the game to a shootout.
Dupuis was the only shooter to convert, while Nathan Ramos, Xavier Madore, Mathys Morrissette and Aidan Vallance were all turned aside for Yorkton.
Joel Anderson started between the pipes for the Terriers and stopped nine of the 10 shots he faced. Brady Low took over midway through the second period and turned aside 16 of 17 shots before being tagged with the shootout loss.
Yorkton finished with a 34-27 advantage in shots on goal. The Terriers went 0-for-2 on the power play while holding Virden scoreless on three opportunities with the man advantage.
The Terriers now sit at 1-0-1 through their first two preseason contests.
