YORKTON, SK — The Yorkton Terriers erupted for four goals in the second period and received 23 saves from Alexandro Montoya as they cruised to a 7–2 victory over the Warman Wolverines on home ice.
The opening twenty minutes featured just one goal, and it came from the Terriers.
Defenceman Thomas Ries snuck in from the point and ripped his 14th of the season past Wolverines goaltender Tye Timmerman to open the scoring. Mattias Schoffner and Gavin Bartha picked up the assists.
It was also a rarity that both Terriers goaltenders saw action in the opening frame. Starter Alexandro Montoya was relieved by Callum Creig for the final 1:11 while Montoya had his mask repaired. Creig stopped the only shot he faced, while Montoya turned aside seven.
Yorkton directed 11 shots on Timmerman in the period.
The middle frame was all Yorkton as they struck four times.
Gabriel Courchesne got things started, beating Timmerman for his 27th of the season. Moments later, Vinay Junek jammed home his 15th on a rebound created by a Tyler Palin point shot to make it 3–0.
The Terriers struck twice more less than a minute apart as Gavin Bartha slipped his fourth past Timmerman, before captain Tylan Henrikson ripped home his sixth to extend the lead to 5–0.
Yorkton outshot the Wolverines 14–11 in the second period.
In the third, the Terriers kept their foot on the pedal. William Léonard capped off his league-leading 29th of the season after Jye Zawatsky forced a turnover behind the Wolverines net, making it 6–0.
Warman got on the board shortly after, as Cam Sarna beat Montoya glove side.
Yorkton answered with a shorthanded penalty shot, with Evan Auld ripping his seventh of the season low blocker.
The Wolverines added a late goal as Sarna backhanded his ninth past Montoya.
With the win, the Terriers join the Flin Flon Bombers as the only two teams to reach 30 victories this season. Yorkton returns to action at 6:00 PM tomorrow when the Estevan Bruins make their final visit to Westland Arena.
