In a game that included a rink change and a crazy bounce, the Yorkton Terriers prevailed over the Weyburn Red Wings 2-1. Kishaun Gervais and Enrique Fontes had the goals, while Kael DePape, in his fifth straight start, made 19 saves in the win.
The first period ended scoreless between the two teams. Both had their chances on goal, but DePape and Dazza Mitchell were sharp in net. The wackiness would then begin during the first intermission. After an issue that made the ice surface unsafe at the Westland Insurance Arena, the teams, officials and the league agreed to move the contest to the Kinsmen Arena.
The game resumed at 9:45pm and the Terriers pressed for the icebreaker. However, it was the Red Wings who would strike first. Ethan Whillans, split the defence and beat DePape with a good shot, for his first career SJHL goal and a 1-0 Weyburn lead.
The Terriers came out firing in the third period. On and offensive zone face-off, a shot got caught up in the equipment of Clay Sleeva. Gervais found the bouncing puck in the slot and wired a shot past Mitchell for the game tying goal. A little later, the Terriers got a lucky bounce. Fontes shoveled the puck deep into Weyburn’s zone. The puck careened off the zamboni door, pinballed off of Mitchell’s pads and trickled into the Red Wing net to give Yorkton a 2-1. The goal stood up as the game-winner.
Mitchell was sharp in goal making 44 saves in the loss, while both teams were scoreless on their power-play chances.
The Terriers have a little bit of time off before hosting the Battlefords North Stars on Saturday at the Westland Insurance Arena. The game can be heard on the GX 94 online stream with the pre-game show starting at 7:20pm and the play-by-play beginning at 7:30pm.
