Terriers Pick Up Point Fall to Bombers in Shootout

FLIN FLON, MB: Justin Lies scored the lone goal in the shootout to lift the Flin Flon Bombers over the Yorkton Terriers 3-2 inside the Whitney Forum.

The Bombers opened the scoring on the powerplay seven minutes into the opening frame. Keefe Gruner capitalized on a rebound off the pad of Terrier goaltender Adam Kelly for his first of the season.

For Kelly, this was his first start post-Christmas break.

The Terriers would respond six minutes later as Assistant Captian Jarron Desnoyers continued the strong campaign with his 14th of the season as he asked into the offensive zone, and his shot hit the shoulder of Harmon Laser-Hume and went over and into the net, tying the game at one apiece. The Bombers got four powerplays to the Terriers one in the opening twenty minutes.

In the middle frame, the Terriers got their first lead of the hockey game, capitalizing on their third powerplay of the contest. Brett Butz jammed home a loose puck at the side of the net for his 6th of the season and a 2-1 Terriers lead.

The bombers would answer back 3:23 later as an Anthony Bax point shot found its way past Kelly, tying the game at two.

There was no scoring in the middle frame, meaning we needed overtime.

In the extra frame, both teams have tremendous chances to end the game, the first belonging to the home side.

Vockler and McNutt dashed down the ice on the 2 on 1, and Adam Kelly flashed the leather, robbing the defenceman, keeping it 2-2.

Then it was David Coyle having the Terrier’s best chance of overtime, as he deked backband forehand, but Laser-Hume snatched it out of the air, sending the game to the shootout.

In the shootout, the Desnoyers, Vockler, Hammond, Anderson, and Coyle were all stopped, meaning Bombers captain Justin Lies could win it with a goal, and that he did, outwating Kelly and giving Flin Flon a 3-2 win.

The Terriers have picked up 3 of a possible 4 points; they will look to bounce back tomorrow afternoon against Flin Flon at 4:00 PM.
