Terriers Edge Melfort In Overtime To Take Series Lead

Greg Nelson had a pair of points including the game winner in overtime, as the Yorkton Terriers take a 2-1 series lead with a 2-1 victory over the Melfort Mustangs. Kael DePape was sensational in goal with 31 saves, while Parker Jasper also scored for the Terriers.

Both goalies were perfect through 40 minutes of play. Joel Favreau and DePape matched each other save for save until the late stages of the third period. Tye Scherger picked up the puck and stormed down the left wing, before steering the puck through DePape. It was Scherger’s first of the playoffs and it gave Melfort a 1-0 lead. Yorkton responded three minutes later. A bouncing puck was settled down by Jasper, who wired a shot through a maze of bodies and into the top corner, tying the game at one.

To overtime we go, where the Terriers were steered to victory by a pair of heroes. While on the penalty kill, DePape robbed Marco Lopez, who slipped in wide open on the right wing. Across came DePape with the left pad, and the game continued. But not for long. After a dump in off the pads of Favreau, Nelson picked up the puck in the left corner and threw it on goal. The puck careened off the pad of Favreau and into the Melfort net, giving the Terriers a 2-1 win in overtime.

Both teams penalty kill were excellent with Yorkton killing off all six Melfort power-plays, while the Mustangs were a perfect four-for-four. Game 4 is set for Wednesday night at the Westland Insurance Arena. A tailgate will be held by GX 94 and FOX FM, while 50/50 is a guaranteed $2,000.
