Terriers’ Third-Period Rally Falls Short in Flin Flon

FLIN FLON, MB – The Yorkton Terriers put together a third-period comeback, but ultimately came up short in a 4-2 loss to the Flin Flon Bombers on Saturday night.

With both teams looking to bounce back from disappointing losses the night before, the opening twenty minutes featured an entertaining, back-and-forth battle.

Neither side could find the back of the net in the opening frame, as both goaltenders were sharp early.

Yorkton’s Callum Creig turned aside all nine shots he faced, while Flin Flon’s Finn Werner made eight saves at the other end.

Both teams had one opportunity on the power play but were unable to capitalize.

Early in the middle frame, the Bombers were awarded a penalty shot, but Creig came up with a big blocker save to deny Nathan Helfenstein and keep the game scoreless.

Moments later, however, the home side broke the deadlock as defenceman Braydon Bruce redirected a shot past Creig to give Flin Flon a 1-0 lead.

The Bombers weren’t done there, striking twice more before the intermission to take a commanding three-goal advantage.

Nathan Lalumiere doubled the lead after banging home a loose puck in front of Creig, before Ty Wasyluk wired a shot low glove side to make it 3-0.

Yorkton had the lone power-play opportunity of the middle frame but couldn’t solve Werner.

Despite being outscored 3-0 in the period, the Terriers held a 12-11 edge in shots, with both teams deadlocked at 20 apiece through forty minutes.

The Terriers refused to go away quietly in the third period, clawing their way back into the contest with a pair of power-play goals from Tyson Medernach and Peter Godley to cut the deficit to 3-2.

However, the Bombers restored their two-goal cushion following a controversial scramble in front of the Yorkton crease, making it a 4-2 game.

That would be as close as the Terriers would get, as Flin Flon held on to secure the victory.

Creig finished with 27 saves in the loss, while Werner turned aside 27 shots for the Bombers.

With the loss, the Terriers fall below the .500 mark with a 4-5-1 record.

Yorkton will now look to get back on track Wednesday night when they travel to Weyburn to take on the Red Wings.
