KINDERSLEY, SK – The Yorkton Terriers saw their early-season unbeaten in regulation run come to an end Saturday night, as a four-goal second period from the Kindersley Klippers proved to be the difference in a 7-3 road loss at the WCEC.
Kindersley came out with some early pressure and opened the scoring when Charlie Kay finished off a setup from Austin Schafer and Marlo Majkovic.
The Terriers settled in and responded with a strong push of their own. Xavier Madore tied the game with his first goal of the season, jumping into the play and beating Klippers goaltender Ethan Suhr. Jake Briltz picked up the lone assist on the Yorkton marker.
The game remained tight following the equalizer, but Kindersley regained the lead before the intermission. Austin Bruce finished off a pass from Cooper Flath to put the Klippers back in front.
Yorkton had some opportunities to respond late in the frame but couldn’t find the equalizer before the horn.
The Klippers held a 10-6 advantage in shots after the opening period, with both teams going 0-for-1 on the power play. Callum Creig turned aside eight of 10 shots for the Terriers, while Suhr stopped five of six at the other end.
The second period proved to be the turning point, with Kindersley scoring four times to build a commanding 6-1 advantage.
Pryce Thiessen extended the Klippers’ lead early in the frame, converting on the power play before the game turned physical.
Sean Grohman was assessed a major penalty for goaltender interference along with two roughing minors and a game misconduct. Players from both teams were handed additional roughing penalties during the ensuing scrum.
Kindersley capitalized on the extended power-play opportunity, with Talen Lewis finding the back of the net to make it 4-1.
The Klippers struck again less than two minutes later, with Cooper Flath scoring on the power play to stretch the lead to 5-1. The goal brought an end to Callum Creig’s night, with Brady Low entering in relief for his first game action of the season.
Creig finished with 12 saves on 17 shots.
Kindersley added one more before the end of the period, as Bruce scored his second of the night on the power play to make it 6-1.
Despite the difficult second period on the scoreboard, the Terriers generated offensive pressure, outshooting Kindersley 20-10 in the frame.
The Klippers added another early in the third when Schafer snapped a shot past Low to extend the lead to 7-1.
The Terriers continued to battle and got a pair back before the final horn.
Captain Thomas Ries split the Kindersley defence and finished the play for his first goal of the season, cutting the deficit to 7-2.
Madore then added his second of the night late in the period, as his point shot found its way through traffic and into the Kindersley net to make it 7-3.
That would be as close as the Terriers would get, the loss marks Yorkton’s first regulation defeat of the young 2026-27 season.
The Terriers will now turn their attention to a highly anticipated matchup next Saturday evening, when the Flin Flon Bombers visit Yorkton in a rematch of last season’s Canterra Seeds Cup Final.
