Despite out-shooting the Red Wings 47-22, the Terriers fell in a shootout 4-3 to fall to 7-10-0-1. Tyson Janzen had a goal and a helper,  while Kael DePape made 19 saves in the loss.

Weyburn got the game’s first goal early in the first period. Braden Birnie was found wide open on the back door and took full advantage of a Nikolas Sombrowski feed to make it 1-0. The Terriers responded 1:04 later when JD Hall elected to take the shot on a 2-on-1, beating Jackson Fellner over the glove. Yorkton took their first lead of the game on the power-play. Janzen’s point shot hit a leg and the puck fluttered past a surprised Fellner to make it 2-1 Yorkton. The Red Wings replied on a power-play of their own. Graham Skinner released a wrist shot from the blue-line, and Beau Larson tipped it home for his first goal as a Red Wing, to tie the game at 2.

Yorkton dominated the first half of the second period and were rewarded with a goal and their second lead of the game. Janzen’s point shot was stopped by Fellner, but Enrique Fontes batted home the rebound for his fourth goal of the season, and his third against the Red Wings. Weyburn answered back to tie the game at three. Cooper Chisholm, playing for his hometown Red Wings, scored his first career SJHL goal after a Terriers’ turnover in their own zone, rifling the puck over the shoulder of DePape.

A physical third period saw Gavin Ingram get into a fight, and the Terriers would out-shoot the Red Wings 15-3, but their would be no score, and the game moved on to overtime. Overtime saw strong defensive play by both squads and nobody could find the back of the net, so it was off to the shootout for Yorkton and Weyburn.

The shootout saw both goalies put on a clinic. Karsten Kruska struck first for the Terriers with a laser over the glove of Fellner, and Ty Mason responded for the Red Wings. It took 10 rounds, which saw the Terriers hit two posts along the way, before Graham Skinner beat DePape on a well placed wrist shot. Tanner Sklaruk had a chance to keep the shootout going for Yorkton, however, Fellner made the save giving Weyburn a 4-3 victory.

Yorkton will wrap up their lengthy road trip this weekend with visits to Melville and Melfort. GX 94 will broadcast the game at the Horizon Credit Union Centre against the Mils, with the pre-game show at 6:50pm and the play-by-play kicking off at 7:00pm.
