Jerome Maharaj’s third-period power-play goal proved decisive as the Weyburn Red Wings edged the Yorkton Terriers 3-2, snapping Yorkton’s eight-game winning streak.
The Terriers opened the scoring early in a penalty-filled first period. Tylan Henrikson struck on the power play at 4:30, assisted by Keenan Ingram and David Coyle. The goal, Henrikson’s fifth of the season, came as the puck bounced past Angelo Zol. Weyburn’s discipline issues saw them take four penalties to Yorkton’s one, while their power play failed to capitalize.
Goaltenders shone early, with Yorkton’s Callum Creig stopping all eight shots, including a highlight-reel save on Ethan Dekay, and Zol making 9 saves on 10 shots.
The second period continued the penalty trend, with Yorkton taking four minors to Weyburn’s one. The Terriers came close to doubling their lead when Keenan Ingram’s one-timer was denied by Zol’s exceptional pad save. Weyburn had a golden opportunity during a 5-on-3 power play but couldn’t convert.
Weyburn finally broke through, tying the game 1-1 when Blake Betson capitalized on a defensive turnover, beating Creig glove-side. The Red Wings outshot the Terriers 12-10 in the period.
In the third, Lucas Schmid gave Weyburn the lead, slipping the puck under Creig after a faceoff win. However, the game turned physical as Ryder Rommelaere delivered a knee-on-knee hit to Jaron Desnoyers, resulting in a five-minute major power play for Yorkton. Desnoyers did not return to the game.
Yorkton capitalized on the major, with Thomas Ries scoring his sixth of the season to tie the game at 2-2.
Weyburn responded on a power play of their own after Thierry Laliberte was called for interference. Jerome Maharaj’s perfectly placed shot through traffic gave the Red Wings a 3-2 lead, which they held to the final whistle.
These two teams will meet again on Wednesday on the road in Weyburn, the game will be broacasted on GX94 Radio.
