- YORKTON, SK — The Yorkton Terriers made a strong statement this weekend, sweeping a home-and-home series against the CJHL’s second-ranked Humboldt Broncos with a come-from-behind 5-2 victory on home ice, a night after picking up a 5-3 win against these same Broncos.
The Broncos opened the scoring in the first period, as Tyrone Sobry slid the puck past Terriers goaltender Callum Creig for his first of the season. They doubled their lead seven minutes later when Jacob Strizzi found space in the slot and made no mistake, scoring his 8th of the campaign.
The Terriers quickly responded. Jye Zawatsky set up defenceman Mikale Budz, who joined the rush and buried his first SJHL goal past Broncos netminder Charlie Tritt to cut the deficit to 2–1.
Despite Humboldt getting the lone power play of the opening frame, Yorkton held a 16–12 edge in shots after 20 minutes.
Just 27 seconds into the second period, the Terriers pulled even. Austin Horbachewsky found Kale Johns all alone in front, and he tied the game 2–2 with his third goal in the last two games.
The Terriers continued to press and grabbed their first lead of the night on the power play. Gabrielle Courchesne rifled home his fourth of the season, with assists going to Thomas Ries and Aidan Vallance.
Yorkton dominated the middle frame, outshooting the Broncos 20–4 and controlling the pace throughout.
In the third, the Terriers added some much-needed insurance. On the power play, Tylan Henrikson pounced on a rebound and buried his first of the season. Zawatsky and Brett Buckley collected the assists.
With time winding down, Cash Lanigan sealed the win, ripping his first SJHL goal into an empty net to give Yorkton a 5–2 lead.
Goaltender Callum Creig was solid when called upon, turning aside 20 shots for the win.
The depth of this team has been on full display this weekend, in particular the young players as 7 of the 10 goals scored this weekend came from first year players.
With the victory, the Terriers improve to 2-2-1 on the season and now set their sights on a home matchup with the Weyburn Red Wings this Tuesday at Westland Insurance Arena.
