YORKTON, SK: Regular season hockey will be played tonight inside Westland Insurance Arena. The Weyburn Red Wings visit the Terriers for the first of back-to-back games; the latter will be played Sunday afternoon in Weyburn.
The Terriers will look to build off a strong preseason that saw them win four of the five games, with the final game a convincing 7-0 win over their rivals down the highway in Melville.
Upfront, the Terriers can play with most teams in the league with a very strong returning forward group. They return five of their top eight scorers from last year, including new captain Jaron Desnoyers, who led the team with 50 points a year ago.
A newcomer who has fit in nicely is William Leonard, who finished the preseason at the top of the leading scorers, tied with Tate Schofer with seven points.
The back end is pretty young, with five guys yet to play in the SJHL. However, they did showcase speed and skill throughout camp and the preseason, so seeing how that unfolds throughout the year will be interesting.
In net, the Terriers are in great hands with 20-year-old goaltender Ethan Farrow locking down the cage, who will look to build off a 17-win, 34-start campaign last year. Pushing Farrow this year will be newly signed Callum Crieg, who comes to Yorkton from the Island Wild and posted a sparking 11-4 record with a .912 Save Percentage.
A Look at The Opposition
The Weyburn Red Wings are coming off a season where they made the playoffs and pushed the Humboldt Broncos to seven games in a series they ultimately lost.
They return half a dozen players from last year, including their goaltending tandem.
Dazza Mitchell and Angelo Zol create a tough challenge for opposing teams most nights and will undoubtedly be the team’s backbone all year.
