The Yorkton Terriers are red-hot heading into their Saturday night showdown with Highway 10 rival Melville, fresh off a thrilling 5–4 comeback win at home against the Estevan Bruins on Friday night.
Defenceman Thomas Ries was the hero, scoring the go-ahead goal with just 3.3 seconds left in regulation. It was his second goal of the game and his 13th of the season, as Ries took over the SJHL lead in points by a defenceman with 38.
Rookie forward Cash Lanigan also had a monster night, recording a goal and three assists. The performance vaulted him into the top three in league rookie scoring with 32 points.
It’s always must-watch hockey when these two franchises meet. Separated by just 41 kilometres, the rivalry intensified during last year’s first-round SJHL playoff series, and there’s been no love lost between the Terriers and Millionaires this season.
Tonight marks the fifth meeting of the year, with both teams earning wins both at home and on the road.
Yorkton enters the contest tied for the Bunge Division lead with Weyburn and holding the tiebreaker. Melville, meanwhile, sits in eighth and holds the final playoff spot, collecting points in seven of their last ten games.
Puck drop from the CN Community Centre is set for 7:00 PM.
