Terriers Hammer Mustangs in Penalty Filled Affair

The Melfort Mustangs and Yorkton Terriers special teams were on display early in the opening period as Kaleb Binner opened the scoring just over two minutes into the game. Skating shorthanded, Binner ripped a shot off the post and in past Callum Creig to give the Mustangs the early lead.

The Terriers responded just 34 seconds later on that same power play as Cash Lanigan buried his 10th goal of the season, with Jye Zawatsky picking up the lone assist.

Yorkton continued to push and struck again before the midway point of the frame. Gabriel Courchesne capitalized on a turnover created by Zawatsky, slipping his 15th of the year through the wickets of Madden Mulawka to give the Terriers a 2–1 lead.

The Terriers weren’t done there. In the final 10 seconds of the first period, and once again on the power play, a loose puck found a wide-open Courchesne at the side of the net. He made no mistake, scoring his second of the night and 16th of the season to extend the lead to 3–1.

Yorkton outshot Melfort 16–12 in the opening period and went a perfect 2-for-2 on the power play.

In the middle frame, the Terriers’ top line delivered once again with some late heroics. William Léonard finished off a crisp three-way passing play with Gabriel Courchesne and Jye Zawatsky, burying his 19th goal of the season.

Through forty minutes of play, Yorkton held a 26–19 advantage in shots on goal.

The third period belonged to the Terriers, who poured in four goals as Tylan Henrikson, William Léonard, Kale Johns, and Owen Roberts all found the back of the net.

The final frame was also filled with fireworks, with the two teams combining for 154 penalty minutes in the third period alone.

With the win, the Terriers improve to 18-11-2 on the season and will be back in action at home Tuesday night when the Estevan Bruins visit Westland Arena.

In goal, Callum Creig turned aside 27 shots to secure his 13th win of the year.
