YORKTON, SK – The Weyburn Red Wings used a power-play marker and a pair of shorthanded goals to propel them to a 5-2 victory over the Yorkton Terriers on Tuesday night inside Westland Insurance Arena.

The opening frame was a tight, defensive battle. Both teams traded chances, but neither could break through despite several powerplay opportunities. The Red Wings had two chances with the man advantage, while the Terriers’ lone opportunity lasted just nine seconds. Yorkton carried much of the play, outshooting Weyburn 14-9 in the period, but the game remained scoreless after 20 minutes.

In the second period, the visitors finally struck first when Drew Molde found the back of the net, sneaking one past Terriers’ goaltender Alexandro Montoya to make it 1-0. The response from Yorkton came shortly after, as rookie Austin Horbachewsky ripped a perfectly placed shot off the post and in for his first career SJHL goal, tying the contest.

The teams continued to exchange blows midway through the period. Roan Burgess restored the Red Wings’ lead, but the Terriers answered back quickly when Thomas Ries’ point shot navigated through traffic and beat Weyburn netminder  Preston Patenaude to even things at 2-2 — Ries’ third goal of the young season.

From there, the Red Wings took control, scoring three unanswered goals, including a pair of shorthanded tallies off the stick of Lucas Schmid to seal the win.

Montoya turned aside 33 shots in the loss for Yorkton, who will now shift their focus to a Highway 10 home-and-home series with the Melville Millionaires this weekend — Friday in Melville and Saturday back at home inside the Westland Insurance Arena.
