YORKTON, SK – Russell Aitkenhead scored on a penalty shot just 34 seconds into overtime, lifting the Waywayseecappo Wolverines to a 4–3 victory over the Yorkton Terriers in preseason action.
The opening period was tightly contested, with both teams finding the back of the net. Waywayseecappo struck first at 4:32 when Dylan Prettie kept on a two-on-one and beat Conner Nicolson glove side for his first of the preseason. Yorkton responded late in the frame, as Broden Wotherspoon buried a setup from Theo Cleland and Kaden Sperle to even the score 1–1.
Both sides exchanged penalties but failed to capitalize on the power play. Starting goaltenders DJ Mecas (WAY) and Nicolson (YOR) were solid before being replaced midway through the second by Grady Robert (WAY) and Josh Blair (YOR).
In the second, the Wolverines regained the lead when Ryder Delaquis tipped in a point shot late in the period. Despite Yorkton firing 15 shots on goal in the frame, Robert stood tall to preserve the 2–1 advantage heading into the third.
Waywayseecappo extended its lead early in the final period, as Liam Flett snapped a shot blocker side past Blair to make it 3–1. The Terriers answered just minutes later, with Taye Shukin jamming home a loose puck to cut the deficit to 3–2.
With the goaltender pulled in the dying minutes, Yorkton forced overtime when defenceman Liam Hynd’s point shot found its way through traffic to tie the game 3–3.
However, the extra frame was short-lived. Awarded a penalty shot early in overtime, Aitkenhead beat Blair on the forehand to seal the 4–3 win for the Wolverines.
