Boston Bilous stopped 30 Yorkton shots, while Eric Pearce scored twice, and the Estevan Bruins took a 2-0 series lead over the Yorkton Terriers after a 3-1 win at Affinity Place. Nolan Wutzke had the lone Terrier goal, while Kael DePape made 25 saves in the loss.
Estevan opened the scoring past the midway point of the first period. Mikol Sartor found Pearce on a 2-on-1, who one-timed a shot past DePape. The Bruins extended their lead. A gaffe from DePape saw the Yorkton net-minder throw the puck right onto the stick of Cody Davis, who deposited it into the empty net, shorthanded, to give Estevan a 2-0 lead. Terriers responded less than a minute after the Davis’ goal. Wutzke picked up a pass, flew down the left wing and fired the puck through Bilous for his first of the postseason to make it 2-1.
Yorkton pressed for an equalizer but couldn’t find pay dirt, and it was the Bruins who would find an insurance marker. With less than a minute left in the hockey game, a Tanner Sklaruk pass was broken up at the Terrier blue-line, and Pearce walked in alone on DePape, sniping a shot over the Yorkton goaltender to cap off the 3-1 victory.
Very few penalties were called this game, as the Terriers went 0-for-2 on the man advantage, and the Bruins were 0-for-1. Game 3 will take place at the Westland Insurance Arena on Tuesday.
