Clarke Huxley had a pair of goals, as the Melfort Mustangs took game one of the quarter-final series against the Yorkton Terriers by a 4-1 count. Tanner Sklaruk had the lone goal while Kael DePape made 27 saves in the loss.

The Mustangs opened the scoring in the first period. A shot from Curtis Hammond bounced off the back boards to the side of DePape’s goal, where Huxley got to the puck first jamming it home for a 1-0 Melfort lead. Mustangs doubled their lead with less than a minute to go in the period. On a two-on-one Noah Wilson made a blind pass to a wide open Thomas Moore, who made no mistake, making it a 2-0 game after 20 minutes of play.

Melfort further extended their lead in the second period. Zac Somers on a rush into the Yorkton, released a shot that fluttered past DePape for a 3-0 Mustang lead. The Terriers cut into the Melfort lead. After being denied on a great individual effort, Sklaruk received a back door feed from Maddux Nollski and went top shelf on Joel Favreau for his first goal of the postseason. Melfort restored their three goal lead before the end of the period. Huxley, shorthanded, let go a shot from the left face-off circle, which fooled DePape, making it a 4-1 hockey game, a score that would stand through the rest of the hockey game.

Favreau stopped 27 shots in the win, while Melfort’s power-play went 0-for-7 on the night. Yorkton was 0-for-4 on the man advantage. Game 2 will take place at the Northern Lights Palace on Saturday. The game will be broadcast on GX 94 with the pre-game show starting at 7:20pm and play-by-play kicking off at 7:30pm.
