WEYBURN, SK: Jaron Desnoyers Shorthanded goal late in the third period held up as the eventual game-winner, as the Yorkton Terriers defeated the Weyburn Red Wings 5-3 on the road.
In the first period, the Red Wing’s offence got off to a better start than Friday night as Blake Betson was the recipient of a bounce that went off a Terriers defender and right on the tape for a wide-open 6×4 to make it 1-0.
Just two minutes later, the Wings would strike again, this time a mad scramble in front of Ethan Farrow, and Keenan Ingram found the loose puck in front and slid it home, doubling the lead to 2-0.
The Terriers nearly got one back as the top line stacked a couple of good shifts in the offensive zone, but Dazza Mitchell kept it 2-0.
The Terriers tested Mitchell ten times in the first period, and the Wings had the only powerplay of the period, going 0/1.
The Terriers found their offence early on in the middle frame. Just 32 seconds in the period, William Léonard spotted a streaking Jeff Hammond, and he made a deke to the backhand, beat Mitchell to pull the Terriers within one.
The Terriers would get into some penalty trouble, giving the Wings a pair of powerplays, but Farrow and the Penalty Killers kept it a one-goal game.
The Terriers would pull even with 6:51 remaining in the second period, the top line again. Hammond found Léonard in the slot, and his shot snuck under the arm of Mitchell, tying the game at two a piece.
Both teams had nine shots in the second period, and the Terriers held a slight 19-18 shot advantage after forty minutes.
In the final frame, the Terriers would grab their first lead of the hockey game as a seeing-eye point shot by Riley Cormier found its way past Mitchell for a 3-2 lead.
The Terriers would add to their lead shortly after this time, shorthanded as Jaron Desnoyers beat Mitchell glove side for a 4-2 lead.
The Wings would answer right back as the puck came to Lucas Schmid at the side of the net and he beat Farrow, pulling the Terriers within one.
But that is as close as they would get as rookie defenceman Thierry Laliberté would ice the game with an empty net goal.
With the win, the Terriers improve to 2-0 on the season and will be back in action next Friday in Humboldt.
