With the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League trade deadline just days away, teams and general managers across the league are putting the final touches on their rosters in hopes of a long Canterra Seeds Cup playoff run.
For the Yorkton Terriers, the focus has been on strengthening the blue line ahead of the January 10 deadline, as the club made a pair of moves to bolster its defensive corps.
The Terriers completed a trade with the Swan Valley Stampeders of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League, acquiring 19-year-old defenceman Gavin Bartha in exchange for forward Dylan Ruff and defenceman Zach Hertz.
Ruff, a Sylvan Lake, Alberta native, appeared in 12 games this season, recording one goal and three assists. Hertz, who hails from Billings, Montana, suited up in 21 games, scoring three goals and adding three assists.
In Bartha, the Terriers add size, experience, and offensive production on the backend. The 19-year-old has recorded 20 points this season, including six goals.
Bartha is excited for the opportunity in Yorkton as the team prepares for the stretch drive.
“I’m excited for the opportunity here in Yorkton and the chance to play in front of passionate fans,” said Bartha. “I play a 200-foot game with a good offensive touch and just want to help the team any way I can.”
The Terriers also welcomed back a familiar face on the blue line with the return of 20-year-old defenceman Tyler Palin. The Estero, Florida native recorded 27 points, including nine goals, in 48 games last season. Palin began the current campaign with the Elmira Aviators of the North American Hockey League before rejoining Yorkton.
“I feel at home wearing a Yorkton jersey and being part of this community,” said Palin. “There’s nowhere else I’d want to finish my junior career, and I’m excited to bring a veteran presence with offensive upside and playoff experience as we push for a championship.”
Head Coach and General Manager Emery Olauson believes both additions will add valuable depth and stability to the Terriers’ blue line.
“We wanted to add experience and depth to our defence, and when the opportunity to acquire Gavin came up, we couldn’t pass it up,” said Olauson. “He’s a big body who moves the puck well and has a heavy shot. Tyler was a key part of our team last season and brings high character, skill, and competitiveness. We’re thrilled to have him back as we push toward the playoffs.”
Both Bartha and Palin are expected to make their Terriers debuts tomorrow night when the defending champion Melfort Mustangs visit Westland Insurance Arena. Puck drop is set for 7:00 PM.
