Terrier Alumni Spotlight: Dustin Nehring

This week’s alumni spotlight we look back to the 2003-2006 seasons and check in with Dustin Nehring from Springside, Saskatchewan. Nehring joined the Terriers for the 2003/04 seasons after playing two seasons with the Yorkton Mallers/Harvest of the U18AAA. Both seasons saw Nehring put up good points playing in 37 games, scoring 10 goals and 18 assists for 28 points in both campaigns. Nehring wasn’t scared to back down to anyone and liked to play a physical game recording 100 penalty minutes each season.

Nehring joined the Terriers when he was 18 years old and fit right into the lineup. Dressing in 51 games, Nehring scored 3 goals, added 8 assists with 147 penalty minutes. Nehring and the Terriers lost in the division finals after finishing 4th in the South Division. For Nehring and the Terriers bigger things were on the way.

The following season would be Nehring’s second year with the Terriers. After getting knocked out in the division finals, the Terriers came to play in the 2004/05 campaign. Nehring once again was a regular in the Terriers lineup and saw his points increase. In 48 games played, Nehring scored 6 goals while adding 20 assists and 239 penalty minutes. At the end of the regular season, the Terriers finished second in the South. In 21 games played in the post season, Nehring scored 2 goals and added 5 assists for 7 points. Nehring and the Terriers would go on a great playoff run, capturing the SJHL championship. The Terriers would end up short of the national tournament losing in the Anavet Cup.

Nehring and the Terriers knew there was unfinished business with coming up short of the national tournament and the Terriers rolled out of the gates to start the 2005/06 campaign. With a record of 37-11-4-3, the Terriers finished 1st in the league at the end of the regular season. Nehring, dressed in 39 games, scoring 10 goals, adding 33 assists for 43 points. Nehring had a great post season and scored 5 goals, 12 assists in 12 games and helped the Terriers capture their second SJHL championship in as many years.

The Terriers went on to win the Anavet cup that season and punched their ticket to the RBC cup tournament. In 6 games at the RBC cup, Nehring posted 2 goals and added 4 assists. A strong showing at the tournament helped the Terriers reach the final game but unfortunately loss in the finals.
