The Yorkton Terriers went 3/7 on the power-play and killed off 7 of 8 penalties, as they steamrolled the Melfort Mustangs 6-2 for their third straight victory. Steven Norum had a pair of goals, while Kael DePape made 34 saves in the win.
The Terriers started the scoring early in the first. Carson Henry, after serving a penalty, followed up a Clay Sleeva drive to the Melfort net, picking up the loose puck and wiring it past James Venne. The Mustangs would tie it at 1 with the Teddy Bear Toss goal. Tye Scherger unleashed a bomb from the right half wall, over the arm of DePape for his third goal of the season. Yorkton regained the lead before the end of the period. Norum steered home a back door pass from Maddux Nollski for his second goal of the year, making it 2-1 Yorkton.
The Terriers power-play exploded for three goals in the second. 50 seconds in, Tanner Sklaruk’s wrister from the point slipped through a crowd past a screened Venne to make it 3-1. JD Hall also scored his fourth goal of the season, sliding home a rebound from his knees to make it 4-1. Greg Nelson got his first point as a Terrier with an assist on Hall’s power-play marker. The Terriers got their third straight goal on the power-play, this time Norum scoring his second goal of the game, batting home a bouncing puck, making it 5-1. That marker chased Venne from the game, where he stopped 14 of 19 shots. The Mustangs struck on a power-play of their own before the end of the period. Trenton Curtis jammed home a rebound from a Ben Tkachuk shot, making it 5-2.
Erik Boers adds an empty netter in the third to seal a 6-2 victory for the Terriers. Yorkton will take their three game winning streak to Affinity Place on Saturday, when they face the Viterra Division leading Estevan Bruins. The game will be broadcast on GX 94’s online stream with the pre-game show at 7:20pm and the play-by-play starting at 7:30pm.
