YORKTON, SK – Maddox Amaral scored two third-period goals, while goaltender Dazza Mitchell turned aside 47 shots to lead the Humboldt Broncos to a 5-3 victory over the Yorkton Terriers.

In the first period, the visitors struck first as Cade Kennedy’s point shot on the power play found its way past Ethan Farrow’s glove, giving Humboldt a 1-0 lead.

Shortly after, the Terriers had a lengthy 5-on-3 power play when Brayden Skogstad and Rylan Hue were sent to the box. Despite generating several quality scoring chances, they couldn’t solve Mitchell, who was making back-to-back starts since returning from injury.

The Broncos edged the Terriers in shots, 12-11, in the opening frame.

In the second period, Humboldt added to their lead. First, Michael Dowdall converted on a penalty shot, beating Farrow under the glove to make it 2-0. Then, Ryder Knutson fired a puck on goal from the slot, which deflected off Farrow’s glove and into the net, extending the lead to 3-0.

The Terriers finally broke through late in the period when Tate Schofer had a point shot deflect off him and into the net for his ninth of the season, cutting the deficit to 3-1.

Humboldt outshot Yorkton 15-12 in the second period, bringing the two-period total to 27-23.

The third period began with Amaral scoring twice for the Broncos, including a power-play goal, to open up a commanding 5-1 lead.

Yorkton responded with a late push. Schofer added his second of the night on a 4-on-3 power play, and shortly after, David Coyle netted his 27th goal of the season to cut the lead to 5-3. The Terriers continued to pepper Mitchell, outshooting Humboldt 27-9 in the final frame. They had chances with the goalie pulled but couldn’t solve Mitchell again, as he finished the night with 47 saves. Farrow made 32 stops in the loss.

With the defeat, the Terriers have now dropped three straight games. However, they received some help on the out-of-town scoreboard, as Melville defeated Weyburn, keeping Yorkton just one point back of the division lead.

The Terriers return to action next Wednesday on the road against Melfort. Puck drop is set for 7:30 PM.
