YORKTON, SK: Thomas Ries scored his 1st SJHL goal, and goaltender Callum Creig stopped 20 of 22 shots he faced as the Yorkton Terriers defeated the Kindersley Klippers 5-2 and remained perfect on the season.
The opening twenty minutes inside Westland Arena between the Klippers and Terriers was eventful.
It saw seven combined penalties, three for the Klippers and four for Yorkton.
In this one, it was the visitors finding the scoresheet first, as Will Christian picked the pocket of Harrison Aldridge at the blue line, and a spinning backend snuck through the wickets of Callum Creig for a 1-0 lead.
The Terriers would strike back on a 5 on 3 as Aiden Knutson jammed home his second in as many games, tying the game at 1-1. Jye Zawatsky and David Coyle picked up assists.
Creig, who was making his Yorkton Terriers debut, stopped 7/8 in the opening frame.
In the second period, the Terriers would grab their first lead of the game off a weird one from the side of the side as Carter Briltz threw it towards the goal, and it ramped up O’Halloran’s pad and into the net for his first of the campaign.
The visitors would nearly tie the game after Stein Dostal had a breakaway stepping out of the penalty box, but he hit the iron.
Both teams would trade powerplays, and it was the Terriers cashing in again on the man advantage yet again. After some good work in the offensive zone for nearly the full two minutes, it came to the side to Dustin Renas, and he sniped it short side for his second of the year, and more importantly, doubling the Terrier’s lead to 3-1. Zawatsky and Coyle picked up their second assists.
The home side held a 19-15 advantage after twenty minutes.
In the third period, it was a bit of a track meet as both teams had good scoring opportunities, but both goalies stood tall.
The Klippers would pull within one just past the midway point of the final frame as Dayton Tailfeathers jammed home a loose puck at the side of the net for his first of the season.
The Terriers, however, would respond.
Rookie Defenceman Thomas Ries dashed into the offensive zone and went bar down past O’Halloran, restoring the Terrier’s two-goal lead.
Then, with the goaltender out for the extra attacker, Jaron Desnoyers capped it all off, sending his 7th of the season into the empty net.
With the win, the Terriers remain perfect and will be tested on Tuesday night when the Flin Flon Bombers visit Westland Insurance Arena.
