NIPAWIN, SK – Thomas Ries scored just 59 seconds into overtime as the Yorkton Terriers earned their second straight victory, defeating the Nipawin Hawks 2–1 on Wednesday night.
The opening period was a tightly contested frame highlighted by one goal. Jye Zawatsky got the Terriers on the board midway through the period, firing a quick shot past Hawks goaltender Gage Roberts on the blocker side for his fifth goal of the season. Drew Heil and William Leonard picked up the assists on the play.
Both teams had a chance on the power play in the first, but neither could convert, as the penalty killers on both sides held firm. The Terriers carried the edge in shots, outshooting Nipawin 17–13 through the opening 20 minutes.
In the second period, the Hawks found the equalizer when Mason Karakochuk beat Callum Creig to tie the game at 1–1. Each team had a pair of power play opportunities in the middle frame, but the special teams continued to hold strong.
With no scoring in the third period, the game headed to overtime. It didn’t take long for the Terriers to end it, as defenceman Thomas Ries dashed down the left wing and roofed a shot under the bar for his fifth goal of the season, securing the win for Yorkton.
Goaltender Callum Creig was outstanding between the pipes, turning aside 38 shots to earn his sixth victory of the season.
With the win, the Terriers move above the .500 mark, improving to 7–6–1, and will look to carry their momentum into Friday night’s home matchup against the North Battleford North Stars.
