“Surprised and Excited” — Ries Earns Call to Team Canada West

Representing your country on the biggest stage is rare — and always earned.

That’s the opportunity now in front of Thomas Ries, who has been selected to Team Canada West for the 2025 World Junior A Challenge in Quebec, running December 7–13.

The Humboldt native is in his second season wearing Terrier colours after arriving via trade from Melfort, and he quickly became a fan favourite for the way he plays the game — hard-nosed, tough, and fearless. He credits much of that style to NHL Defenceman Drew Doughty.

“I developed my play style in a way I can put everything on the line to win a hockey game. I feel like I’ve always played that way,” Ries said.

When he learned he made the roster, the first phone call was an easy decision — “My mom.”

Surprised and excited, Ries shared what the opportunity means to him.

“It means quite a bit to play for my country,” he said. “I think everyone wants that opportunity, and it means a lot that I get to. Growing up, I always hoped I would have this chance to represent Canada.”

Head Coach Emery Olauson was full of praise for the Terriers’ fearless blue-liner.

“Tommy is the 200-foot player that as a coach is almost impossible to find,” said Olauson. “Everyone recognizes his defensive commitment and willingness to sacrifice — blocking shots, winning battles — but his skating and offensive ability are still underrated. Wearing the Maple Leaf is a dream for any Canadian hockey player or coach. I’m incredibly proud of Tommy for earning this opportunity, and I know he will represent his family, team, league, and country with heart and pride.”

Looking ahead, Ries is most excited for the environment that comes with the international stage.

“Just playing in a different atmosphere, with new surroundings and a new crowd, and seeing how they cheer us on at the national level — it’s exciting,” he said.

Terrier Nation will be cheering loud and proud every step of the way.
Good luck, Tommy! 🇨🇦🐾
