Logan Keup scored twice as the Melfort Mustangs defeated the Yorkton Terriers 5-1 at Northern Lights Palace.

Melfort opened the scoring late in the first period when Logan Keup netted his second goal of the season at 16:08, assisted by Danton Cox and Owen Nelson. Both teams traded penalties earlier in the period, but neither power play converted.

The Mustangs extended their lead in the second frame with goals from Reilley Kotai and Brayden Westerlund. Kotai capitalized on a defensive lapse at 6:57, with Will Munro providing the assist. Westerlund added an unassisted insurance goal shortly after. Melfort’s Ashton Hutchinson rounded out the period with a tally at 18:11, bringing the score to 4-0. Owen Nelson picked up his second assist of the game, solidifying his role as a key playmaker.

The Terriers found some life early in the third period on the power play when Jeff Hammond scored his seventh goal of the season, assisted by Thomas Ries, at 2:09. However, Melfort quickly answered back as Logan Keup secured his second goal of the night at 6:23, assisted by Tao Flory, sealing the game.

Melfort outshot Yorkton 34-29. The Terriers went 1-for-4 on the power play, while their penalty kill remained perfect at 4-for-4.

Melfort’s Kristian Coombs was a brick wall in net, stopping 28 of 29 shots for a stellar performance. Yorkton’s Callum Creig made 26 saves before being replaced by Ethan Farrow in the third period.

The Terriers face a quick turnaround as they return home to host the Battlefords North Stars tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 PM.
