YORKTON, SK: Jeff Hammond and David Coyle scored powerplay goals, and Callum Creig stopped 21 of 22 as the Yorkton Terriers defeated the Melville Millionaires 5-1 inside Westland Insurance Arena.
In front of a ruckus crowd, the Terriers opened the scoring on the powerplay. Jeff Hammond took a pass from Defenceman Bryce Dahl and beat a screened Loic Morin for his second of the season. Dustin Renas also picked up an assist.
The Terriers nearly doubled their lead on the penalty kill as Quinn Tavender got a breakaway from the redline but was denied with the left pad.
The Millionaires had a couple of close calls in front of Creig, but he stood tall, making two of his seven stops of the period.
The Terriers went 1/3 on the powerplay and outshot the Mills 9-7.
In the middle frame the Terriers added to their lead with a pair of goals.
First, it was Desnoyers finishing off a beautiful pass by Riley Cormier for his 10th of the campaign. Hammond picked up the second assist.
They would strike again on the powerplay shortly after, as Knutson connected on a no-look pass to a wide-open David Coyle at the side of the net for his second of the season and a 3-0 Terrier lead.
The Mills would answer back with a powerplay goal of their own, as Forward Flynn Maxcy beat Creig blocker side cutting the Terrier lead to 3-1.
The Terriers went on to outshoot the Millionaires 8-3.
The Terriers continued to stick with it in the third period and were rewarded.
Vinay Junek carried the puck into the offensive zone and left it for Tavender, who made a cross-ice pass to Tylan Henrikson, who ripped it past an outstretched Morin, restoring their three-goal lead.
Then, after a bit of pressure from the visitors, the Terriers put the game away for good as Tyler Palin threw the puck at the net, and it went off a Mills defender in front for his third of the season.
Callum Creig was outstanding in net, stopping 21 of 22, improving to 4-0 on the young season.
With the win, the Terriers move to 8-2 on the season and will be back in action tomorrow night in Melville for a 7:00 PM puck drop.
