YORKTON, SK: Evan Auld and Jaron Desnoyers scored goals eight seconds apart late in the second period, and Ethan Farrow stopped 29 of 30 as the Yorkton Terriers defeated the Flin Flon Bombers 4-1.
In the first period, the Terriers got two early powerplays and looked to take a 1-0 lead when William Léonard poked a loose puck past Bombers goaltender Kenneth Marquart, but after discussion, it was waived off for jamming the pad.
The Terriers nearly opened the scoring midway through the opening frame; after some nice passing, the puck was sent backdoor to David Coyle but was denied with the glove.
The Bombers had one powerplay in the first period and failed to capitalize, thanks to two big stops by goaltender Ethan Farrow.
The Terriers were outshot 10-6 in the period.
In the middle frame, the home side would strike early.
Defenceman Riley Cormier got the point shot through to Marquart. It left a juicy rebound as Evan Auld jammed home the loose puck for his first SJHL goal.
The Terriers would strike again moments later, off another Cormier point shot. This time Knutson tipped home his third goal in as many games, doubling the Terriers lead.
The Bombers would cut into the lead just past the midway point of the second period as Carter Cormier jammed home a loose puck at the side of the net past Farrow.
The Terriers would get a golden opportunity to add to their lead when they were gifted a full two-minute 5 on 3; despite the majority in the Bomber’s end, they could not convert.
The Terriers would strike back late in the period as Quinn Tavender would create a 2 on 1 with Auld. His first shot was blocked, but Auld stuck with it and backhanded his second of the night, restoring the Terrier’s two-goal lead.
Just eight seconds later, the Offence put up another one; this time, the Captain dashed down the right wing and roofed a backhand top shelf over Marquart for a 4-1 lead. The goal was Desnoyers team leading 8th of the season.
Farrow was sharp in the second period, stopping 10 of 11 shots he faced.
The Terriers got into penalty trouble in the third period, handing the Bombers three consecutive powerplays.
The penalty killers held their own and killed all three, continuing their strong start, as they were rolling at a 95.0% clip shorthanded heading into tonight.
The Terriers would get two powerplays later in the frame but could not convert and finished the game 0/7.
With the win, the Terriers improve to 5-0 on the season and will be back in action Sunday afternoon when the Humboldt Broncos make their first visit to Westland Arena.
